A movement began in the mid to late 1990s by Catholic universities to develop teacher preparation programs that would support Catholic education by recruiting and training faith-filled, energetic men and women to serve as teachers in the Catholic schools across the nation.
Rooted in the success found by the University of Notre Dame in their Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) program, the university hosted a meeting in the spring of 1999 that included universities with similar programs and universities interested in starting their own. Through the financial, strategic and technical support provided by these "founding" programs, more and more universities were able to develop their own teacher preparation programs.
Beginning in 2000, partnership schools began meeting twice a year to exchange information and best practices. With the growth and development of this partnership, the directors of the teacher service programs desired to organize themselves in a more formal structure. The University Consortium for Catholic Education (UCCE) officially formed in 2005.
Today the UCCE consists of fourteen programs, placing over 400 teachers in Catholic/parochial schools in approximately 24 states each year. The UCCE has created an innovative community of Catholic universities committed to the service of children
in PK-12 Catholic/parochial schools. In addition, through its member programs, it fosters teachers who will become the future leaders and advocates of Catholic education.
